Im Ersten Weltkrieg diente er als Gefreiter in der 12. Kompanie des 24. bayerischen Infanterie-Regiments. Er wurde mit dem Eisernen Kreuz 2. Klasse und mit dem Milit\u00e4r-Verdienstkreuz 3. Klasse mit Schwertern ausgezeichnet.
