Er war der Sohn eines Landwirts (Thalerbauerssohn).\u00a0 Im Ersten Weltkrieg k\u00e4mpfte er als Landsturmmann in der 2. Kompanie des 17. bayerischen Reserve-Infanterie-Regiments. Er wurde mit dem Eisernen Kreuz 2. Klasse ausgezeichnet.
