Er war der Sohn eines Landwirts und diente im Ersten Weltkrieg im 2. bayerischen Landwehr-Infanterie-Regiment. Er war mit dem Milit\u00e4r-Verdienstkreuz mit Schwertern ausgezeichnet worden.
